When the US Air Force installed the Distant Early Warning (DEW) line across the top of North America to detect hostile aircraft, it needed totally reliable communications over arctic wastes. Bell Labs designed the White Alice system in 1956, which stations up to 200 miles apart were connected by microwaves, a system made possible by the Labs development of “over-the-horizon” microwave transmission.
